Detectives in L.A. are now investigating a recording taken of City Council members’ racist comments to see if it was recorded illegally.

The recording was leaked earlier in the month and showed multiple members partaking in racist conversations with derogatory comments.
Once released to the public, there were huge changes and shifts within the City Council for one of the largest cities in the United States.
What recording was shared showing L.A. City Council members making racist comments and was it illegal?
According to My Twin Tiers, once the recording was leaked, Nury Martinez, the president, stepped down.
Two other L.A. council members who were called on to step down have resisted. Even the White House called on them to step down.
The recording was of a private 2021 meeting between Martinez and Councilmen Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo. Ron Hererra, head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor was in the meeting as well.
Now an investigation has been launched over an allegation of eavesdropping.
The meeting was to discuss redrawing of council districts, but it was filled with racist language that mocked their colleagues and even one child of a colleague. It appeared that their goal was to protect the Latino political strength within their districts.
Nobody currently knows who recorded it or why they did it.
California state has a law that all parties need to consent to being recorded during a private conversation.
Now, the person who recorded the conversation could face criminal charges. Those being recorded without their knowledge can now sue.
The investigation is happening after those being recorded asked for it, otherwise it wouldn’t have happened.
