Recall issued for dry shampoos over cancer-causing chemical

Various dry shampoos from Dove and Nexxus have been issued a recall for having a cancer-causing chemical in them.

Recall issued for dry shampoos over cancer-causing chemical

The recall was issued by Unilever and it impacts brands through Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI, and TRESemme.

The item being recalled is dry shampoo.

Why was there a recall on dry shampoos from Unilever?

The chemical in these various brands is called benzene, and it’s known to cause cancer.

The products impacted were manufactured before October 2021.

According to WENY News, the Food and Drug Administration said they have been distributed to retailers all across the country.

Some of the dry shampoos impacted

  • Dove Dry Shampoo Volume and Fullness
  • Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh Coconut
  • Nexxus Dry Shampoo Refreshing Mist
  • Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Refresh and Revive

The chemical that has Unilever worried is a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can happen from inhalation, orally, or through the skin. It can cause leukemia and blood cancer.

If you have these shampoos you need to stop using them and go to unileverrecall.com for instructions on getting a reimbursement for the impacted aerosol products.

There was a similar recall last year when Procter & Gamble issued a similar recall for over 30 types of hair products that were in aerosol spray cans. These included dry shampoo and dry conditioner. There was also a recall on deodorants and sprays for Old Spice and Secret last year through Procter & Gamble.
