Vet who attacked Rep. Zeldin at campaign event in Fairport will be released to treatment facility in Bath

The man accused of attacking Republican candidate for governor Lee Zeldin will get released next week

David Jakubonis was in federal court on Wednesday, and found out that he will be released into an inpatient alcohol treatment facility next week.

His attorney John DeMarco said Jakubonis is ready to ‘do better’.

Prosecution argued that releasing Jakubonis would be a ‘hope it works’ approach, but the defense argued that treatment was the right path.

“I think it’s a little of a misnomer, the program that he’s about to enter into and the services are going to be like they’ve never been before,” DeMarco said. “I think that increases long-term success.”

The facility he’s headed to is in Bath. It’s a 28-day treatment plan with monitors and GPS tracking in place.

He’s been in federal custody since July when the attack took place.
