Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. Lee Zeldin in his bid for governor.
Trump said Zeldin earned his ‘total and complete’ endorsement, noting that he is a ‘great and brilliant’ attorney.
Zeldin held a fundraiser in September with the former president. The Republican candidate for governor has been criticized for voting against certifying the 2020 election results.
Governor Kathy Hochul, the Democrat taking on Zeldin next month, tweeted a response to the endorsement.
“Donald Trump just officially endorsed my opponent. Lee Zeldin has enabled and embraced the former president’s extremism since day one — but New Yorkers rejected Trump and they’ll do the same for Lee in November,” she said.
The latest polling shows Zeldin behind Hochul by 8-10 points. Her lead is largely attributed to the larger New York City voting block, which leans heavier Democrat. Upstate the race is nearly a tie.
Election Day is November 8th.
