#5 William Smith slips past RPI, wins seventh straight

The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team edged Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1-0, in a Liberty League contest at ECAV Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With their seventh straight victory, William Smith is now 11-1-2 on the season with a 6-0-1 record in conference play.

Amanda Kesler played all 90 minutes in the William Smith goal and made two saves. Megan Wampner and Sierra Skelding both played 45 minutes in goal for RPI (3-6-3, 1-3-2). They combined to make five saves.

KEY STATS:

  • The Herons finished the game with a 19-3 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • William Smith has recorded eight straight shutouts against the Engineers.

FIRST HALF:

  • The Herons outshot RPI 9-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
  • In the ninth minute, Sara Sedlacek corralled a bouncing ball in the 18-yard box and chipped a shot on goal. Kesler moved to her right and made a save.
  • In the 18th minute, Julia Berg scored the game’s lone goal off a Ruth Hotaling corner kick. Berg used her body to knock the bouncing ball across the goal line. It was her fourth tally of the season.
  • The Herons continued to apply pressure but could not sneak another shot across the goal line. In the 37th minute, Katrine Berg had a scoring attempt taken off the goal line by an RPI defender.

SECOND HALF:

  • William Smith peppered the Engineer goal in the second half, but Skelding was up to the task, stopping all three shots that were on goal.
  • RPI had a scoring chance in the 83rd minute. Rachel Borra’s shot from outside the 18-yard box was smothered by Kesler.

UP NEXT:

William Smith returns home for the final two games of its regular season. The Herons will be back in action Saturday, October 22, when they welcome Vassar to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
