Lawmaker says fees to upgrade to Real ID should be waived ahead of federal airline changes next year

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara says it’s time to waive transaction fees associated with switching to a Real ID.

Beginning May 2023 Real IDs or enhanced driver’s licenses will be required for air travel in the U.S.

Those licenses come with a $70 price tag.

Santabarbara says the state should waive the costs associated with it.

Driver’s licenses in New York are valid for eight years. However, many are being forced to upgrade to the Real ID earlier than expected.

It’s unclear if the measure could receive enough support to pass the legislature.
