Steuben officials warn of phishing ad encountered by users of DSS website

Officials in Steuben County are warning the public about a phishing scam involving social services.

According to a release, DSS recently received a report from an individual of potential phishing after a person submitted an application online.

The state was notified.

According to officials, the ad appeared after the individual submitted the application. They warn residents to be cautious of things asking for personal information online.

Emails and communication from county or state officials will be from state or county email addresses. Email addresses with domains other than the entity you’re communicating with are likely phishing.

Report anything suspicious to local authorities.
