Canandaigua FD could have 18 career firefighters next year: What will it cost taxpayers?

The Canandaigua Fire Department may be nearing full-strength.

Thanks to a tentative agreement for service between the City, Town, and Canandaigua Fire Department – funding to add three new firefighters will come at some point in the next year.

Canandaigua FD could have 23 career firefighters next year: What will it cost taxpayers?

That means the department would have 18 career firefighters on staff. That would be enough to have four on-duty firefighters at all times.

Four on-duty firefighters was the recommendation that came from the Center for Public Safety Management.

City Manager John Goodwin tells the Canandaigua Messenger that he was confident terms could be met. “We always knew we would be able to come to terms,” he told the Messenger. “The town and city have a long history of working together for the benefit of Canandaigua. This is another example where we were able to make it work for everybody.”

How much will it cost?

It would cost the Town around $1 million per year. That said, a tax increase would come to Town of Canandaigua residents.

The Canandaigua Fire Department is funded by the City and Town. The existing agreement expires at the end of the year.
