Steuben DA reviewing fatal pedestrian accident in Hornell: 93-year-old killed, driver not identified but ticketed

Police say a 93-year-old man died on September 30th after being struck by a vehicle on Genesee Street.

John Prete, 93, of Route 109 had left the post office in the village and was crossing when he was struck by a westbound vehicle.

The incident happened around 2:40 p.m.

He was taken to St. James Hospital in Hornellsville by ambulance. Then, Prete was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

That’s where first responders say he succumbed to injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was cited for failure to exercise due care to a pedestrian in the roadway. However, their identity was not released by law enforcement.

The Steuben County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident.
