Geneva parents frustrated over bus policy: Why do some kids have to walk 30 minutes to school?

Parents in the Geneva City School District are wondering why their kids are eligible for the bus this year.

Those who live in the Washington/Jefferson streets neighborhood on the city’s west side were picked up by district buses. This year, they are not eligible, according to reporting by the Finger Lakes Times.

“We found out that the kids aren’t eligible for a bus,” Erin Main told the FLT. She’s one of those concerned parents. “(The district) will not budge.”

The issue: They live 1.4 miles from the middle school their 12-year-old daughter attends. Meanwhile, the district has a 1.5 mile radius policy, which makes her ineligible for pickup.

How long does it take to get to school? Nearly a half hour.

Parents say it’s a lot to ask students to walk that far. Especially when its dark for parts of the school year – like the upcoming months.

According to the FLT, the district says it comes down to upholding the policies in a clear, consistent manner.

That said, parents are growing increasingly frustrated with that policy.
