Mets drop series opener to Braves

The New York Mets opened a massive three-game series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday night at Truist Park and fell, 5-2. The two teams are tied in the National League East with five games remaining in the regular season.

Jacob deGrom allowed three runs on five hits over six innings while striking out 11. All three runs that he surrendered came via the home run. Austin Riley and Matt Olson smacked back-to-back homers off him in the bottom of the second, and Dansby Swanson took him deep in the bottom of the sixth.

Tylor Megill gave up the other two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

New York plated the first and last run of the contest. Luis Guillorme singled home a run, and Tomás Nido crushed a solo shot.

Max Scherzer will get the ball on Saturday as the Mets will try to bounce back, and even this three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m.
