The New York Mets have called up top prospect Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of their massive three-game series against the Atlanta Braves this weekend.
The 20-year-old Álvarez is rated the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball by MLB.com. He batted .260 with 27 home runs, 78 RBIs, and a .885 OPS combined at Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse this season.
In a corresponding move, New York placed designated hitter Darin Ruf on the 10-day injured list with a neck strain. Also, reliever Alex Claudio was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Alvarez will bat seventh and DH in his Major League debut on Friday night.
