Man faces assault, other charges after causing I-81 crash from passenger seat during dispute

State police arrested a Brewerton man following a crash on I-81 in Cicero.

On Saturday, September 24 Kevin Somers, 32, was charged with third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief.

Around 9:20 p.m. an SUV operated by Dawn Edwards, 52, was traveling south on I-81 when the front seat passenger, identified as Somers, became upset and grabbed the steering wheel.

He caused the vehicle to drive off the roadway and into several trees. Edwards was transported to Upstate University Hospital with severe back injuries.

Somers had to be extricated by firefighters and was taken into custody. He damaged his leg restraints while in custody and other state police property.

He was transported to the Onondaga County Justice Center to await arraignment.

State police were assisted by Brewerton firefighters.
