The Syracuse Orange football team improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2018 with a 22-20 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.
After Virginia grabbed a 20-19 lead with just under six minutes to go, the Orange moved down the field and into field goal range for Andre Szmyt, who drilled his fifth field goal of the night to put Syracuse on top with 1:14 remaining in the game. Following that, the Orange defense held Virginia out of field goal range to secure the victory.
Garrett Shrader threw for 277 yards and ran for a touchdown. Oronde Gadsen II led all receivers with seven receptions for 113 yards. The running game struggled as Sean Tucker tallied just 60 yards on 21 carries.
Garrett Williams recovered a fumble and notched an interception. Mikel Jones led the team with eight tackles. Caleb Okechukwu added three tackles and two sacks.
