The Syracuse Mets blanked the Worcester Red Sox, 5-0, on Wednesday night at Polar Park to even the six-game series at a game apiece.
Jose Butto started on the mound and tossed a gem. The right-hander fired seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits, one walk, and striking out a season-high 11 batters. Stephen Nogosek and Sam Clay each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
The game was scoreless until the top of the eighth when Jake Mangum plated a run with an RBI single. Francisco Alvarez, who has been red-hot at the plate, followed that with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0.
Syracuse added three more runs in the top of the ninth to increase the lead. Gosuke Katoh scored the third run of the contest on a wild pitch. JT Riddle and Michael Perez smoked back-to-back RBI singles to cap off the scoring.
The week-long series will continue on Thursday at 6:45 p.m.
