A local couple who had been awarded more than $42 million in damages related to the city of Geneva’s handling of the Geneva Foundry will get much less than anticipated.
According to court documents examined by the Finger Lakes Times, the $42 million settlement will be something closer to $3 million. In fact, it could be even less.
The City won’t pay the settlement. It will be paid for by the state’s Environmental Restoration Program. The state is also paying for cleanup of contaminated properties around the former foundry.
The Geneva Foundry operated from the 1960s to 1980s.
In attorneys’ effort to contest the $42 million award, they noted that the judgment was ‘clearly punitive’ and ‘grossly excessive’.
Todd and Lindsey Powers of Wadsworth Street sued the City more than two years ago, and the case has still not been fully resolved.
