The New York Mets used a four-run eighth inning to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-3, and complete the four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Nimmo blooped one into shallow left field for what would be the game-winning RBI single. Later in the inning, Daniel Vogelbach gave the Mets some breathing room with a two-run single. Eduardo Escobar capped off the scoring with a groundout.
Earlier in the game, Jeff McNeil plated two runs with a single and a bases-loaded walk. Pete Alonso also drove in a run with a groundout.
Jacob deGrom started on the mound and was cruising through the Pirates lineup until the sixth when he surrendered a game-tying three-run home run to Oneil Cruz. That was the only blemish as the right-hander struck out a season-high 13 batters over five innings Seth Lugo, Joely Rodríguez, and Trevor May all had scoreless appearances out of the bullpen.
The Mets will head to Milwaukee to begin a three-game series with the Brewers on Monday at 7:40 p.m.
