High speed pursuit on Thruway ends in Ontario County: Troopers say federal charges likely after vehicle stolen in Canada

State police report that on Sunday around 10:52 a.m. they responded to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection with a fleeing eastbound vehicle on I-90 from the Niagara Falls border.

Further investigation determined a silver Mercedes Benz entered New York by the Peace Bridge after failing to stop at U.S. Customs, and was reported stolen out of Canada.

Troopers observed the Mercedes traveling erratically, at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver, who was not identified by police, failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

A short time later, state police out of Syracuse who were stationary on the Thruway in Ontario County deployed a tire deflation device.

The suspect vehicle then became disabled. The driver was taken into custody without further incident, according to troopers.

Officers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrived on-scene shortly thereafter. The suspect was turned over to them to face federal charges.

The investigation remains active.
