Self-checkout improvements
In 2020, Kroger signed on with Everseen. This Irish AI company makes self-checkout machines that utilize a videos. It looks to see if a customer tried to scan an item that has been added into the baggage area or not. The machine will then question if the person wants to try scanning again. One or more unbilled item will alert a store associate to keep watch. This method is intended to steer customers into self-correction.
One reason why this method is bound to be more effective is because seeing yourself on camera in a video is irrefutable. Tom Argigi is the director of asset protection for Kroger. He found that 80% of customers will self-correct after viewing the video. The majority of the time, customers are not intentionally trying to get away with products.
Kroger’s AI solution has boosted sales as well as increased inventory and accuracy records. More than 1,700 stores are using the new technology. Argigi also announced that the company is deeply interested in machines that specifically target the process of scanning produce.
Effective produce scanners from KanduAI
KanduAI is headquartered in Israel and was founded in 2018. They have an effective method of using AI to scan produce. 92% of the time KanduAI’s machines correctly recognize produce down to the item.
Ariel Shamesh is the founder of KanduAI. This technology makes less mistakes. Without this system, there are approximately 18% errors. However, this system reduced the error level to 4%.
Right now the scanning technology from KanduAI is active in France and Israel, while they are only in the test phase in the US and Canada.
Austrian company Anyline is in the test phase for technology that aims to solve the ID issue at self-checkout. Alcohol and tobacco will notify an employee to verify your ID. Initially, this technology was made for police officers.
These systems supposedly protect the privacy of those whose faces it recognizes. However, customers can still opt out and confirm their age with an employee.
