Rochester Red Wings edge Syracuse Mets in series opener

The Rochester Red Wings edged the Syracuse Mets, 3-2, in the series opener on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

Tommy Romero started for Rochester and tossed three shutout innings. Harol González got the ball for Syracuse and surrendered a pair of runs over 5 1/3 innings.

The Red Wings opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Andrew Stevenson smoked an RBI double.

Rochester added to its lead in the top of the sixth as Jake Alu brought home a run with a groundout.

In the seventh, Nick Banks crushed his eighth home run of the season to increase the Red Wings’ lead to 3-0.

Both of Syracuse’s runs came in the bottom of the eighth. Dominic Smith smacked his fifth home run of the season, and JT Riddle followed that with his ninth homer of the season.

The Mets had the tying run at first base in the bottom of the ninth, but Red Wings closer Jordan Weems was able to get out of trouble to secure the win.

The second game of this six-game series is set for Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
