The New York Mets opened a three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Friday night at Citi Field and picked up a 7-3 victory.
David Peterson started on the mound for New York and surrendered three runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out six. The bullpen was terrific as Mychal Givens, Joely Rodríguez, and Seth Lugo all had scoreless appearances.
Pete Alonso smacked his 32nd home run of the season to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning. Eduardo Escobar launched his 13th homer of the season and collected three RBIs. Tomás Nido drove in a pair of runs, while Brandon Nimmo chipped in with a run-scoring triple. Jeff McNeil also had a nice night at the plate as he went 3-for-4.
The Mets will try to secure a series win on Saturday with Max Scherzer on the hill. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
