Herons field hockey opens season with 3-0 win at St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team cruised to a 3-0 victory over St. John Fisher University in the season opener for both teams at Growney Stadium. Three different players scored for the Herons.
 
Brittany Foster started and played the first 45 minutes in goal, making two saves. In the final 15 minutes, Kristen McCormick also record two saves. They also benefited from defensive saves by Lauren Jackson and Laurens Van Alen. The Herons combined for 19 shots, 13 of which were on goal, while limiting the Cardinals to six shots.
 
MATCH MOMENTS: 

  • Emily Leonard opened the scoring just 1:36 into the game as her shot from the middle of the box beat Sophia Trozzi (10 saves). Sofia Pattillo assisted on the goal.
  • As the first quarter came to a close, Pattillo muscled her way through the Cardinal defense and notched her first goal of the season at 14:54.
  • In the third quarter, Hannah Huston delivered the final blow to the Cardinals as she recorded her first career goal as a Heron.

“Tonight was a hard fought match and we faced a strong keeper,” Head Coach Sophie Riskie ’07 said. “I’m really proud of the way our team executed our game plan and remained focused on the process for the entire game. We adjusted to the FieldTurf surface well and we look forward to being back on McCooey on Sunday.”
 
UP NEXT:
 
William Smith will open up the home portion of its schedule on Sunday, Sept. 4, when it welcomes No. 13 Ursinus College. The game is scheduled to begin at noon on McCooey Field.
