Yankees place Aroldis Chapman on injured list with leg infection from tattoo

The New York Yankees placed veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to August 24) with an infected wound from a recent tattoo, the team announced Saturday.

New York did not make a corresponding move yet because there was not enough time to get someone to Oakland for Saturday’s game against the Athletics.

The Yankees expect reliever Clay Holmes to return from the injured list on Monday in Anaheim.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Chapman had to stay back at the team hotel because of the infection.

Chapman owns a 4.70 ERA this season to go along with a 1.44 WHIP. The 34-year-old will be a free agent this offseason.
