HeatSmart FLX South is helping folks connect to $20K for weatherization and potential heat pumps. Below is a press release regarding the opportunity:
“About the Opportunity
There is over $26 million designated for HEAP or SNAP holders with an award letter dated October 1st, 2021, or later through NYSERDA’s EmPower NY program.
If you have a HEAP or SNAP award letter dated October 2021 through September 2022 (along with a case number), you may be eligible for up to $20,000 for weatherization and heat pumps. Included are HEAP regular benefits, emergency benefits, cooling benefits, cleaning and tune-up, or repair and replacement. Cleaning, tune-up, repair, and replacement, as well as SNAP, can be applied year-round; specify the program when you call your local office.
Do You Qualify?
Minimum Qualifications Include:
- Your household has HEAP or SNAP approved between October 1st, 2021, and September 15th, 2022
- You live in a 1-4 family home
Important notes about eligibility
- Homeowners AND Renters are eligible
- Municipal Electric customers are also eligible
- You’re eligible regardless of what fuel you use to heat your home
- There is a minimum amount of insulation needed to qualify for a heat pump
- Heat pumps are eligible for funding from utilities as well. Funding from EmPower NY added to utility incentives might not fully cover the cost of heat pumps.

How to Apply
Applicants must have an approved (not received) NYSERDA application by Thursday, September 15th, 2022. HeatSmart FLX South can guide you during and after the application process.

About the program: HeatSmart FLX South is helping families, small businesses, and non-profits choose clean heating and cooling solutions to reduce their energy costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and to increase health and safety. Through free consultations with residents and businesses, the program connects folks to free energy audits (for homes) or low-cost energy studies (for organizations), weatherization, and energy efficiency upgrades tailored to each person.
The goal is for more residents and businesses to adopt heat pump equipment for clean heating and cooling to lower energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
HeatSmart FLX South serves Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, and Yates counties, in cooperation with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations of those counties and is funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Clean Heating & Cooling Communities program.
