Gearan returns to HWS campus as students, faculty ready for fall semester

Hobart and William Smith College’s President Mark Gearan is back.

The two were on-campus Monday speaking with groups of students, staff, and faculty.


Gearan spent nearly two decades as president of HWS from 1999 to 2017. He then accepted a position as President in Residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He was then appointed Director of the Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Gearan was chief of staff and communications director for President Bill Clinton.

He returned to Geneva for the role of president after former HWS President Joyce Jacobsen announced she was be stepping down.

Jacobsen will join the HWS faculty full-time as a Professor of Economics.
