Enfield homeowner catches burglary in progress on security camera app: One suspect in custody, while second remains at-large

A burglary in Enfield, Tompkins County has left one person in custody and authorities searching for the second.

It happened during the early-afternoon hours on Weatherby Road, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say they responded to the home around 1:37 p.m. for a burglary in progress.


The homeowner was at work at the time, witnessed two individuals inside his home through a security camera. He then saw the two individuals carrying long guns.

When deputies arrived the two were gone. However, after a search of the area – one suspect was located.

William Hildreth, 34, of Newfield was taken into custody without incident.

Investigators found one of the individuals brought a long gun to the home invasion. The other was picked up by one of the suspects inside the home.


The second suspect is not believed to be in possession of a weapon, and is likely far from the area.

Hildreth was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The investigation remains active.
