Officials say several floors at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira were damaged over the weekend after an incident involving a person who was being transported there by ambulance.
Arnot Health told WENY-TV that ‘unauthorized activation of a sprinkler system’ resulted in water to damage several floors at the hospital.
According to police an investigation is underway.
Officers were called to the area of the hospital at the request of the Erway Ambulance. Officers were told the ambulance crew was moving a patient, who jumped out of the ambulance, and ran into the hospital.
That patient was hiding from police and hospital staff when they pulled the fire alarm.
The identity of the person was not released. However, police say they were taken into custody on the roof of the facility.
The investigation remains active.
Cleaning crews were seen at the hospital throughout the weekend. Staff moved quickly to get patients away from the damaged area, according to Arnot Health.
