Undersheriff Steve Smith is retiring, but a familiar face in local law enforcement will be assuming his vacated role.
Sheriff Brian Schenck, who leads the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the news in a press release on Thursday.
Smith has served the sheriff’s office for 25 years in an array of roles. He became undersheriff in 2019.
Seneca Falls Police Chief Stuart Peenstra, a Cayuga County resident, will assume the role of undersheriff in January.
“He is a proven leader who leads by example,” Sheriff Schenck said in a release. “I have worked closely with Chief Peenstra for many years and have developed a great deal of respect for his abilities as a law enforcement officer and administrator.”
