National Immunization Awareness Month in Livingston County

The month of August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the importance of getting vaccinated at all stages in your life. Vaccines give you the power to protect yourself and your loved ones against serious diseases like whooping cough, influenza, and pneumonia.

Vaccines affect not only you and your own family, but the whole community. Herd immunity, or community immunity, is when a large percentage of a population is vaccinated against an illness, which then protects the entire community- even those who cannot get vaccinated, such as infants or those with compromised immune systems.

During NIAM, the Livingston County Department of Health encourages you to talk to your health care provider in order to ensure you and your family are up-to-date on the recommended vaccines. The Livingston County Department of Health offers immunizations for children and adults by appointment only.
