The New York Yankees fell to the New York Mets, 6-3, in the Subway Series opener on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
Jordan Montgomery started for the Yankees and allowed five runs (four earned) over 2 1/3 innings. Taijuan Walker started for the Mets and surrendered three runs over six innings.
The Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo hit back-to-back home runs. However, the Mets responded in the bottom of the inning and grabbed a 4-2 lead. Starling Marte lined one over the left-field wall to put the Mets on the board. One batter later, Pete Alonso tied the game with a run-scoring double. Eduardo Escobar capped off the frame with a two-run shot to left-center.
The Mets plated their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the third on a throwing error to make it 5-2.
DJ LeMahieu drove in the Yankees third run of the game in the top of the fourth with a groundout.
The Mets added a huge insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Jeff McNeil ripped an RBI single.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
