Mets drop series opener to Padres, 4-1

The New York Mets fell to the San Diego Padres, 4-1, in the series opener on Friday night at Citi Field.

Max Scherzer started for New York and surrendered a pair of runs on five hits over six innings while walking one and striking out eight.

The Mets plated their lone run in the bottom of the seventh as Luis Guillorme collected an RBI with a double to right.

Eric Hosmer and Trent Grisham homered for the Padres. The other run scored on an error.

Starling Marte had two of New York’s five total hits.

Joely Rodríguez allowed two runs (one earned) in relief. Seth Lugo and Trevor Williams had scoreless outings.

Chris Bassitt will get the ball on Saturday as the Mets will try to bounce back. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
