  • Staff Report

A little before midnight on Friday firefighters were called to 42 South Street for a structure fire at an apartment building.

Second and third alarms were activated shortly after the first units arrived on scene from the Auburn Fire Department.

A total of five people were rescued from the building as firefighters battled smoke and flames. They were transported to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment.

AFD says the Cayuga 911 Center coordinated rescue efforts with one victim who was on the phone, relaying information to first responders as they worked to get everyone out.

The building has been condemned at this time. The status of the three individuals hospitalized as result of the fire was not known, according to firefighters. However, they said that combined efforts of all individuals and agencies involved resulted in a less severe outcome.
