The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed July 17-23, 2022, as New York State Pre-Trial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week throughout the County.
The week honors local community corrections professionals and the difficult work they perform as they seek to uphold the law, while making neighborhoods throughout the County safer places to live and raise families. Livingston County Probation Department Director Lynne Mignemi said probation is often considered the linchpin of the criminal justice system.
“Our probation staff interacts with every law enforcement agency and office in the County and state, as well as multiple public, private and nonprofit agencies in order to meet our mission statement,” she explained. “The work of a probation officer requires constant evaluation, risk assessment and balance in order to meet our mission. I remain humbled and proud of the probation officers and the professional support staff who complete this important work on a daily basis on behalf of the citizens of Livingston County.”
The Livingston County Probation Department has a duty to protect the community, enforce court-ordered sanctions, support the rights of victims, and assist offenders to change, added Mignemi. The department originated in 1956 and has provided community-based services for adults and juveniles since its inception.
Probation has evolved over the years and the probation department duties have expanded to include monitoring ignition interlock device installation and violation report notifications as court ordered under Leandra’s Law, DNA collection, drug screening, an electronic monitoring program, and specialized caseloads for treatment court, sex offenders, juveniles, and investigations for felony-level cases. Most recently, the probation department has been designated the certified pre-trial services agency for the County.
The County Board of Supervisors encourages all citizens to honor these community corrections professionals and to recognize their achievements during New York State Pre-Trial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week.
