The New York Yankees fell to the Boston Red Sox, 6-5, in 10 innings on Saturday night at Fenway Park. The Yankees blew two two-run leads in the loss.
Jordan Montgomery started on the mound for New York and surrendered a pair of runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Boston jumped out to an early lead in the second inning as Bobby Dalbec hammered a two-out RBI single to center.
Aaron Hicks launched one over the right-field wall in the fifth to tie the game, 1-1.
The Yankees grabbed the lead in the sixth. Anthony Rizzo lined one into the gap in right-center for a game-tying RBI double. One batter later, Josh Donaldson ripped one into the gap in left-center for a run-scoring single to give New York a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Rob Refsnyder crushed a solo home run over the Green Monster to make it a one-run game.
The Red Sox knotted the game in the eighth as Alex Verdugo grounded one through the left side for an RBI single. That hit ended up sending the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, Aaron Judge gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead with an RBI double to left-center. One batter later, Rizzo lined one down the right-field line for a run-scoring double. However, Red Sox answered in the bottom of the frame. Jeter Downs smacked one through the right side for an RBI single to make it a 5-4 game. Then, Alex Verdugo hammered a two-out two-run single to right to give Boston the 6-5 victory.
Clay Holmes allowed the game-tying run in the eighth, but the run was charged to Michael King. Wandy Peralta gave up all three runs in the 10th.
Jameson Taillon will get the ball on Sunday Night Baseball as the Yankees go for the series win. The first pitch is slated for 7:08 p.m. on ESPN.
