Motorcycle racer dies after weekend crash at Weedsport Speedway

A 24-year-old motocross racer and Pennsylvania native died on Saturday evening at Upstate University Hospital following an on-track incident at Weedsport Speedway.

Ryan Varnes was part of an incident on the track during the Production Twins Main Event, according to sports publication Progressive American Flat Track.

On-scene personnel reportedly responded and transported Varnes to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“The Varnes family has been a staple in the flat track community for decades, and they need our prayers during this difficult time,” said Gene Crouch, COO of AMA Pro Racing. “Ryan was the class of the field, both on track and off track. His bright smile, perpetual optimism and loyal friendship will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

The cause of the crash remains unclear.
