Newly-named Yates County Department of Emergency Services takes on new duties

There’s a new name and some new responsibilities for the Yates County Department of Emergency Management.

It’s now known as the Department of Emergency Services. The County Legislature passed a local law approving the change at its most recent meeting. Yates County Administrator Nonie Flynn says the local law clarifies what the office does and adds new duties for the Director of Emergency Services, Brian Winslow.

The office provides opportunities for training to County Emergency Responders, coordinates the response to emergencies of all kinds, collaborates on policies with the Enhanced 911 Dispatch Center,  develops and maintains plans, coordinates disaster preparedness and hazardous mitigation activities, and provides support services to many local government organizations.

The department is offering refresher training for firefighters on July 19 at the Himrod Fire Department.

The legislature also reported at its last meeting that, due to strong sales tax receipts, the county had $8 million in unappropriated funds on hand. Listen to my full Inside the FLX conversation with Yates County Administrator Nonie Flynn below.
