UBI programs have grown in popularity since stimulus checks ended, and Rochester, New York has been trying a program of its own.
UBI programs work similarly to stimulus payments, but instead of being a one time payment, they’re recurring.
This could mean weekly, monthly, and even annually.
Rochester, New York UBI program
A program was approved back in 2021 that pays families $500 per month in Rochester.
The pilot program will run for two years.
175 low income families will see $500 per month for the first 12 months of the program.
The second year, a different 175 families will see $500 per month.
Payments of $500 per month for two years in Minnesota
Households that are at or below 200% of the federal poverty line qualify.
Money to fund this program is coming from the American Rescue Act.
In all, $2.2 million dollars will be used.
Many other states and cities have taken to offering UBI payments to residents struggling from the pandemic.
In Newark, New Jersey 400 residents are seeing payments.
North Carolina has focused on formerly incarcerated individuals and they are seeing $500 per month for one year.
