The Rochester Red Wings fell behind early and could not erase the deficit in an 8-6 loss to the Worcester Red Sox on Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. Worcester has now won the first three games of the six-game series.
Josh Rogers made a rehab start for Rochester and surrendered seven runs on four hits over 3 2/3 innings. All seven runs that he allowed came via the home run. Jefry Rodriguez did a nice job in relief as he allowed a run over 4 1/3 innings. Francisco Perez held the Red Sox scoreless in the ninth.
Worcester led 7-0 after four innings thanks to a pair of two-run home runs and a three-run homer.
Rochester tried to come back as they plated six runs in the seventh to make it a 7-6 game. Josh Palacios and Jake Noll had back-to-back RBI doubles. Then, Tyler Gushue drove in a couple of runs with a two-run double. Nick Banks capped off the big inning with a two-run shot. That was his fifth home run of the season.
Johan Mieses homered in the eighth to make it 8-6 and the Red Sox bullpen held onto the lead to secure the victory.
The Red Wings will try to snap their three-game skid on Friday night with Cory Abbott on the mound. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
