On June 28, 2022, nearly 200 government and community leaders, national broadband experts, and members of the business community came together for the first-ever Upstate Rural Broadband Conference at the Doubletree Hotel in Binghamton. The conference was hosted by Southern Tier 8 Regional Board and the Regional Broadband Collaborative to help build the future of New York’s Southern Tier through high-speed broadband infrastructure and economic development initiatives.

Bob Knight, Harrison Edwards; Gary Bolton, Fiber Broadband Association; Jen Gregory, Southern Tier 8 Regional Board; Curtis Hansen, Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC); Kimberly McKinley, UTOPIA Fiber and Heather Gold, Mears Group.
Jen Gregory, Executive Director of the Southern Tier 8 Regional Board announced yesterday at the Conference that the agency would be exploring the expansion of a middle mile fiber ring in Broome, Delaware, Schoharie, and Chenango Counties. The middle mile fiberoptic infrastructure expansion would serve as the foundation for better internet connectivity and wireless services for residents and businesses. Last fall, Southern Tier 8 announced Project Connect, a bold initiative to connect every home, business, and institution in Central New York and Southern Tier to high-speed broadband.
