Pete Alonso homers twice as Mets top Marlins, 5-3

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins, 5-3, on Saturday evening at LoanDepot Park.

Chris Bassitt started on the mound for New York and surrendered three runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out five. The right-hander picked up the win to improve to 6-5 on the season.

Seth Lugo followed Bassitt in relief and fired a scoreless eighth. Edwin Díaz tossed a scoreless ninth and picked up his 16th save of the campaign.

The Mets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Pete Alonso’s 21st home run of the season.

New York plated two runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 3-0. Mark Canha brought home a run with a groundout and Eduardo Escobar had a run-scoring single. Jesus Sanchez put the Marlins on the board in the bottom of the frame with a two-run shot.

Miami knotted the game in the fifth on Bryan De La Cruz’s solo homer.

Pete Alonso smacked his second home run of the game and 22nd of the season in the eighth to put New York back on top, 4-3.

The Mets added a huge insurance run in the ninth. Brandon Nimmo hammered an RBI single to make it 5-3.

Brandon Nimmo collected three hits while Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor also had multi-hit games.

The Mets will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday with David Peterson on the hill. The first pitch is slated for 12:05 p.m.
