Mets drop series finale to Marlins, 3-2

The New York Mets were unable to complete the three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins as they fell, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at LoanDepot Park.

Left-hander David Peterson started on the mound for New York and surrendered a pair of runs over seven innings while striking out eight.

Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Garrett Cooper’s sacrifice fly.

New York plated both of their runs in the third. Brandon Nimmo put them on the board and knotted the game with his fifth home run of the season. Later in the inning, Pete Alonso hammered an RBI double to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. The Marlins quickly tied the game at two in the bottom of the frame on a solo homer by Miguel Rojas.

Mets reliever Adam Ottavino served up a walk-0ff solo home run to Nick Fortes in the ninth and the Marlins secured the victory.

New York had just five total hits with two of them coming from Nimmo.

The Mets will get the day off on Monday before they begin a two-game set with the Houston Astros on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
