The United States Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, meaning individual states can now ban abortion.
Western New York pro-life and pro-choice advocates reacted to the court’s decision Friday in a conversation with FingerLake1.com’s Rebecca Swift.

The ruling came more than a month after a draft opinion was leaked by Justice Samuel Alito.
The decision is the result of a decades-long effort by abortion opponents. The makeup of the Supreme Court also allowed this moment to become possible.
Roe v. Wade has been in place for nearly 50 years. Some believe abortion bans will occur in approximately half of U.S. states now.
However, recent polling showed that Roe v. Wade was something voters wanted to see preserved.

Alito wrote in the final decision that political branches reserve the right to regulate abortion – not the courts.
Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett joined Alito.
