Tompkins County will test unarmed response from law enforcement to select incidents

What happens if police officers respond to incidents unarmed?

That question is being explored through a pilot program in Tompkins County.

A virtual public forum will be held on the program next week.

The forum will outline the elements of unarmed response, and walk residents through the process.

It’s happening Tuesday, June 21 at 12 p.m.

The program will test the effectiveness and outcomes of unarmed response to certain call types. This will not mean all calls will be answered by unarmed officers.

The forum is also going to encourage the public to participate in finding ways to determine whether the pilot program is successful.
