Yankees blank Rays in series opener

The New York Yankees blanked the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-0, in the series opener on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Gerrit Cole started on the mound for New York and tossed six shutout innings while striking out seven. Wandy Peralta was the first one out of the bullpen, and he recorded the first two outs of the seventh before Michael King entered the game and fired 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Clay Holmes picked up his tenth save of the season and extended his scoreless streak to 29 innings.

The only two runs of the game came in the fourth inning with two outs. Isiah Kiner-Falefa ripped an RBI single to left to bring home Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres also scored after Rays left fielder Randy Arozarena airmailed the throw home. Kiner-Falefa had two of New York’s five hits.

The Yankees will send Nestor Cortes to the hill on Wednesday night as they will try to secure their fifth-straight series win. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
