Veteran infielder Alcides Escobar will begin a rehab assignment with the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night, Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said.
He will bat second and play shortstop against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at PNC Field.
Once the 35-year-old is cleared to rejoin the Nationals, he will be utilized as a utility man since manager Dave Martinez committed to Luis García as the everyday shortstop.
The first pitch for Wednesday’s game is slated for 6:35 p.m.
