Upcoming deadline
The IRS is reminding taxpayers that the deadline to file is approaching. It applies to both US citizens, resident aliens abroad, and those with dual citizenship. People who live outside of the US are automatically issued a two month extension.
In order to qualify for this automatic extension you must:
- Both their tax home and abode are outside the US or Puerto Rico
- They are serving in the military outside the US and Puerto Rico on the regular due date of their tax return
It is important that you file your taxes even if you qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion or the foreign tax credit.
The IRS said that these benefits are not automatic and only become available if you file a US return. For additional information, there are instructions on both Schedule 8812 and Form 2441.
The IRS looks to hire 4,000 employees amid late tax refunds, increasing audits on wealthy, and destroying documents
