SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: Storms with damaging winds, heavy rain possible for Finger Lakes, Central New York

Get ready for another warm and humid day throughout the Finger Lakes and Central New York.

Temperatures won’t approach 90 like they have the last two days, but the afternoon will be unsettled with an elevated risk of severe thunderstorms.

A cold front will move southeast into Western New York during the early afternoon hours, according to the Storm Prediction Center. Ahead of the frontal boundary dewpoints will be in the 60s- creating enough instability in the atmosphere to generate thunderstorms.

Who will see thunderstorms?

Everyone will see precipitation by the end of the day. However, not everyone will see strong to severe thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm coverage is expected to expand along the frontal boundary as the afternoon hours progress. The cold front will march across the region- ushering in cooler weather for the remainder of the week.

The biggest threat with these storms will be damaging winds, small hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rain. There shouldn’t be any significant flood risk, since most of the region remains slightly dry for the year.
