Mets defeat Phillies in series opener

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-6, in the series opener on Friday night at Citi Field.

Carlos Carrasco got the start for New York and allowed five runs over 5.2 innings while striking out seven. Chasen Shreve surrendered a run in relief while Drew Smith, Joely Rodríguez, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Díaz had scoreless outings.


Pete Alonso led the Mets offensively with a home run and four RBIs. Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, Eduardo Escobar, and Mark Canha each drove in a run as well.

The Mets go for the series win on Saturday. The first pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
