Pete Alonso’s walk-off home run lifts Mets over Cardinals

Pete Alonso crushed a walk-off home run to lift the New York Mets over the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6, in extras on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.

With the victory, New York took three of four from St. Louis.

Chris Bassitt got the start for the Mets and surrendered four runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings while walking one and striking out three. Edwin Díaz allowed a run in the ninth and blew his second save of the season but Alonso saved the day. Drew Smith tossed a scoreless inning while Colin Holderman gave up an unearned run.

Alonso and Jeff McNeil led the offense with three RBIs each while Brandon Nimmo drove in the other run. Francisco Lindor and Luis Guillorme each had multi-hit games.

Paul Goldschmidt drove in four of the Cardinals’ six runs.

The Mets will head to Colorado to begin a three-game series with the Rockies on Friday night. The first pitch is slated for 8:40 p.m.
