The Geneva Fire Department has provided an update on the structure fire at the former Big M on Castle Street.
The building, which houses a laundromat, coffee shop, and Castle Mini Mart, caught fire around 3:50 p.m.
First units on scene reported smoke showing from the front and rear of the building. Crews made entry into the convenience store and rear loading dock. They found heavy fire in the loading dock area and the back side of the convenience store.
All occupants were accounted for and no injuries were reported.
After partial roof collapse and the fire continuing to grow- interior attack crews were pulled and began a defensive firefight.
Once the fire was knocked down crews were allowed back into the structure to extinguish small pockets of fire.
Several firefighters were treated and released at the scene for heat exhaustion.
The building suffered heavy damage and cannot be occupied at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
GFD said White Springs, West Lake Road, Oaks Corners, Border City, Seneca Falls, and Waterloo fire departments assisted at the scene. New York State Gas & Electric, the Geneva Police Department, Geneva DPW, Finger Lakes Ambulance, Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, and Ontario County EMO also assisted.
